Vitamin D

What is vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol)?

Introduction
-------------------------------------

Vitamin D2 is know best as Ergocalciferol. It has the systematic name "(3β,5Z,7E,22E)-9,10-secoergosta-5,7,10(19),22-tetraen-3-ol". It is created from viosterol, which in turn is created when ultraviolet light activates ergosterol.

D2 vs. D3
------------------------------------

Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol) are both effective forms of vitamin D (Science Daily, 2008). The difference resides within the production and extraction processes. Vitamin D2 is plant based and is produced naturally within mushrooms. TNS does not extract the vitamin D2, but utilizes a state of the art UV infusion process. This process naturally increases the vitamin D content by a factor of 1000.

Vitamin D3 is an animal based byproduct that is extracted using a chemical process from sheep and goat hide. While there are many manufactures of vitamin D3 the number one exporter is China.
