Technical Licenses and Patents
TOTAL NUTRACEUTICAL SOLUTIONS ACQUIRES AN OPTION TO LICENSE AGREEMENT WITH THE PENNYSALVAINIA STATE RESEARCH FOUNDATION FROM NORTHWEST MEDICAL RESEARCH RELATED TO DEVELOPMENT OF PRIOPRIETARY MUSHROOM PRODUCTS.
On September 4, 2008, Total Nutraceutical Solutions, Inc. acquired and was assigned by Northwest Medical Research, Inc. an option to license agreement from Pennsylvania State University Research Foundation (PSRF) related to certain technology. Northwest Medical Research originally entered into the Option Agreement on May 1, 2006, which covered certain intellectual property, know-how, patent applications, patent continuations, divisional applications and any patents issuing for the purpose of developing and commercializing certain Licensed Products, as such terms are defined under the Option Agreement.
The provisional patent application included in the Licensed Patents was entitled "Identification of Selenoergothioneine as a Natural Organic Form of Selenium from Cultivated Mushrooms", U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 60/782,204, filed on March 14, 2006 and naming R. Beelman, J. Dubost, D. Peterson and M. Hausman as co-inventors (the "Original Provisional Patent Application"). The Original Provisional Patent Application served as a priority for U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 11/686,033, filed on March 14, 2007 and entitled "Phytonutrient Compositions from Mushrooms or Filamentous Fungi and Methods of Use" and related Patent Cooperation Treaty ("PCT") patent application PCT U.S.07/63984 filed on March 14, 2007 (the "Patent Applications"; the Original Provisional Patent Application, together with the Patent Applications and any future related continuations, divisionals and national phase applications, as well as all related know-how and good will, referred to herein as the "Licensed Patents").
TOTAL NUTRACEUTICAL SOLUTIONS ACQUIRES AN OPTION TO LICENSE TECHNOLOGY TO FOR THE RAPID GENERATION AND INCREASE VITAMIN D2 LEVELS IN MUSHROOMS AND FUNGI USING PULSED ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT
On November 11, 2008, Total Nutraceutical Solutions, Inc. acquired from Pennsylvania State University Research Foundation (PSRF) an option to license technology related to an invention entitled "Rapid Generation of Vitamin D2 from Mushrooms and Fungi Using Pulsed UV-light" (The Invention). A U.S. Provisional Patent Application was filed on April 23, 2008 and names Professor Robert B. Beelman and Graduate Student Michael Kalaras as co-inventors, Department of Food Science, Pennsylvania State University (PSU).
The PSU scientists studied the effect of Pulsed UB-B lamp treatment on increasing the Vitamin D2 levels in four commonly consumed U.S. mushroom varieties; http://www.foodscience.psu.edu/VitaminDEnrichment.pdf. Pulsed UV light is a technology that delivers energy from light at a high peak power in a short amount of time. A Steripulse®-XL 3000 (Xenon Corporation, Wilmington MA) was used for Pulsed UV light exposure. This study demonstrates that after a very short exposure time of about 1 sec (system generates 3 pulses per second) the Vitamin D2 content of these mushroom varieties can be increased up to 800% DV/serving. Previous studies using continuous UV light has been shown to take at least 5 minutes of exposure to obtain similar values.
