TNS CEO Dr. Marvin Hausman
Chairs Special Session at the First International Congress on Ergothioneine (ERGO)

(July 16, 2011)

----------------------------------------------------------

This conference brings together for the first time a unique group of distinguished speakers, whose research spans many disciplines, to discuss the properties of l-Ergothioneine.

The conference features individuals with extensive experience and expertise in biochemistry, pharmacology, nutrition, cancer, rheumatology, medicine, and other relevant fields. Considerable research has previously been done with this intriguing and powerful antioxidant compound, first identified in 1909 by the French Pharmacist and Ethnobotanist Charles Tanret. The large body of peer reviewed published research has demonstrated the beneficial effects of ergothioneine in a number of conditions caused by or worsened by inflammation and oxidative stress.

L-ergothioneine is not produced in the human body or, for that matter in the bodies of animals or plants. Rather, it is produced by microorganisms in the soil and is passed on to humans, although in extremely low and inconsistent amounts, through the diet. Leading researchers have postulated that l-ergothioneine may actually be an essential nutrient as the human body has a genetic mechanism to administer the distribution and utilization of l-ergothioneine, but no mechanism to make it.

The normal existence of ergothioneine in many tissues of the body, including the brain, eyes, lungs, liver, and reproductive organs further suggests its potential importance for the maintenance or good health as well a therapeutic both for treating and preventing a variety of disorders. Additionally, there is also new, innovative basic and clinically-related research that is being conducted and these recent approaches will also be discussed and compared and contrasted with other approaches being used and advanced for these conditions.
