Results of Recent Animal Studies

Medicinal mushrooms are as beneficial for animals as they are for humans and Total Nutraceutical Solutions (TNS) is fast becoming the leader in developing dietary supplements that offer a nutritional approach to the prevention and treatment of illness and disease in animals. Under the guidance of TNS CEO, Dr. Marvin S. Hausman, a number of clinical studies have been performed to study the potential benefits of mushroom supplements on animals, especially on horses. The results of these studies have guided the development of TNS nutritional supplements for animals, such as our EquiSANO™, a product to nonspecifically increase immune system function with resultant protection of animals against environmental stressors whether chemical or pathogenic. The objective for Dr. Hausman is "Prevention, not Intervention."

This research includes:

  1. A study involving 14 yearling horses at Cobra Farms in Lexington, Kentucky under the supervision of Dr. Jim Morehead, a leading veterinarian for the horse racing industry. Serum and plasma samples were drawn at the start of the study and at subsequent selected times following nutritional supplementation with a mushroom supplement. Blood samples were analyzed at the Webb-Waring Institute in Denver, Colorado, an institute that specializes in antioxidant research. This study showed the follow:

    • the antioxidant capacity of ingested foods can be measured by a simple blood test.

    • Whole organic mushroom supplements can increase the oxidative capacity of horses.

Research results

  1. A study involving racehorses, including those in the barn of Racing Hall of Fame trainer Carl Nafzger, that assessed changes in red and white blood cell counts in horses during a 90-day period of feeding a mushroom-based supplement. The chart below shows the results of white blood cell counts on 33 horses in a Texas study.

  2. The chart below shows the results of white blood cell counts on 36 horses after after only 30 days of ingestion of the supplement. The average increase was 12% and the total white cell count continued to remain within a normal range.

    Research results

The chart below shows that the mean concentration of hemoglobin within red blood cells increased 7.6% after only 30 days of mushroom supplentation in the same racehorses. Increased hemoglobin suggests increased oxygen carrying capacity and may help explain increased animal energy and performance.

Research results

  1. A study undertaken by leading equine dentist Tony Basile on the effects of mushroom supplementation on horses suffering from inflammatory gum disease. The results showed a dramatic improvement in gum health after only 30 days of supplementation.

Research results

  1. A study was performed entitled: “ The Effect of DMSO and L-Ergothioneine on Post-Thaw Semen Parameters in Stallions.” This study was organized by Lisa Metcalf DVM and Marvin Hausman MD and the paper wsa published in the Annual of Reproductive Science; 107 (3-4):332,2008. The results showed that both L-Ergothioneine and DMSO improved post-thaw motility of sperm cells. L-ergothioneine cannot be produced by horses and the best source for this potent antioxidant is mushrooms. Preliminary results from current clinical studies show an improvement in stallion semen quality after oral ingestion of mushroom supplements.
